Bystrom Buckin' Bullz - HISTORY
John's first foray into the bull breeding business began with the purchase of some Brahma cross cows at the Burnt Lake Livestock Market. He was attending a regular cow sale when they were run through the ring. They were cheap and so it began. Next, John borrowed three Brahma cross bulls from Harvey Northcott. Two, we believe, were half brothers to Redip and the other a Panda son. the calf crop from these crosses produced a solid foundation on which to build a herd.
Offspring from the females have included Jiminy Genes, Budda Bing, City Screed Sid and many daughters that we have retained in our herd. Some of the sons became our first proven buckers. Long Rifle and Whiteout became wage earners for Peters and Sons Rodeo.
In 1990, John borrowed another half brother to Redip, S18 True Blue, from Harvey. At this point, cows from both the bucking strain and the beef strain ran together. Breeding True Blue to some Angus cross cows resulted in our first truly extraordinary genetic cross. By luck, the patriarch of the Cricket Line, Z12 Jiminy Cricket, was born... and the rest is history.

| Our Number System
We brand all of our bucking bullz with a Z and a number. The Z identifies the animal as part of our herd. The number following the Z tells what year the bull was born.
The number after that may be arbitrary (as in the order in which he was branded) or it may identify him as a sibling of another bull with the same number (Z72 Jiminy Cricket Jr, Z92 Repeat Offender, Z02 Black Fly are all maternal brothers).
Herd Selection
Although we try hard to make sound genetic crosses, it is always a bit of a crap shoot. In order to avoid feeding animals with no bucking potential, we dummy buck our calves as yearlings using a flank strap and a bull rope. The ones we select as keepers will have to kick high, spin or hook. Currently, we have about a 60% 'keeper' rate. |
